Anirban discovered the Rock Street Journal in 1993 with the first RSJ newsletter. The magazine was instrumental in his subsequent journey as a musician – right from introducing him to the independent music circuit, to helping him discover great talent around him (he met the guitar player for his band, Orange Street, through RSJ!) – to eventually being featured as part of RSJ’s ground-breaking Great Indian Rock (GIR) compilation album series and playing at the GIR concerts for seven straight years. RSJ also released Orange Street’s debut album, Drive Carefully For Our Shake, in 2000, and the band was selected through the GIR 2002 concerts for a tour through Europe – playing at major festivals like Peace And Love in Sweden, Slottsfjell in Norway, the Nottingham Music Festival in the UK and Sundance in Estonia.
Since then, Anirban has made a career for himself in the music business – as Producer/Composer of advertising films for over a decade, with successful campaigns such as Tata Tea (‘Jago Re’) and Dish TV (‘Wish Karo Dish Karo’) and also in feature films, having done the background score for the UTV film Peter Gaya Kam Se and songs for Vicky Donor, for which he was nominated for the Radio Mirchi Awards. However, his passion for independent music has always remained a close part of his life, and his association with RSJ now extends beyond being a fan, musician or loyalist – as he finds himself in the driver’s seat. He is committed to the same ideas that made RSJ an important part of his life – that of discovering new talent, and helping to nurture and support the independent music scene. This is Anirban’s second year as Festival Director for India Music Week. He has been travelling extensively over these past two years, attending many music festivals around the world, garnering understanding and new perspectives to help him take Amit Saigal’s core vision forward. He brings his rich experience as a performer and music maker to his new role as publisher, supporter and company director.
